Celebrate the 10th Anniversary of Tough Enough To Wear Pink: $17 million raised since 2004

The rodeo season is coming to a close as professional cowboys and cowgirls compete for this year’s top titles with high hopes to walk away with a title at this year’s Wrangler National Final’s Rodeo. All along the way, they’re sporting pink to help raise money for Tough Enough to Wear Pink.

Purple Cowboy Wines is a proud supporter of Tough Enough to Wear Pink, an organization dedicated to breast cancer awareness and research. This year, Tough Enough to Wear Pink is celebrating its 10th anniversary!

How it all began…

Back in 2004, Wine Sisterhood founder and Purple Cowboy Boss Lady, Terry Wheatley, teamed up with Karl Stressman, former director of special events for Wrangler and now commissioner of the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association (PCRA), and proposed a colorful dare to their toughest friends.

The dare: dress in pink and blaze across the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo arena in support of breast cancer awareness and research. That dare was met, and those cowboys and cowgirls tore up the arena dressed in pink!

Terry wanted to bring attention to the need for early detection and a cure for breast cancer, starting with that first Tough Enough to Wear Pink Day. She herself had breast cancer surgery; lost her grandmother to breast cancer, and both her mother and daughter have been affected by the disease.

This year, Tough Enough to Wear Pink is celebrating its 10th anniversary and $17 million raised since 2004!

Now a full-fledged national campaign, with sponsors like Wrangler, Tough Enough to Wear Pink provides a campaign and framework for rodeos and western events to help them promote breast cancer awareness and fundraising to benefit their local communities. Purple Cowboy is also the official wine of the PRCA!

Rodeos around the country designate Tough Enough to Wear Pink Days, encouraging patrons and rodeo participants to dress in pink to show their support for the cause. These Tough Enough Days pull in some serious support! Last year, the top fundraiser was the “Cowboys For Cancer Research” in Las Cruces, NM at a whopping $906,424!  (Check out all the top fundraisers here.)

Hats Off to Tough Enough Events

Gunnison

The Tough Enough To Wear Pink™ Western Campaign to raise money and awareness for breast cancer raised over $17 million dollars in 2013 through the hard work of regional rodeos and western events across the country.   The monies raised stayed local to benefit community breast cancer charities – which is the strength of the campaign’s success.

“2013 marked the ninth anniversary of Tough Enough to Wear Pink at the Wrangler NFR and the campaign continues to gain momentum.  Nobody could have imagined that together we would raise millions of dollars for the cause,” said Terry Wheatley. A breast cancer survivor herself, Wheatley is an entrepreneur, wife and mother to professional rodeo competitors.  She founded Tough Enough to Wear Pink in 2004 with Karl Stressman, former director of special events for Wrangler and now commissioner of the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association (PCRA).

We tip our hats to everyone who raised money for breast cancer awareness and research through Tough Enough to Wear Pink and these top 10 fundraising events and rodeos:

For the rodeo newbies in our community – just in case –  here is the official description of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo according to the ProRodeo website…

“The Wrangler National Finals Rodeo is the season-ending championship event for the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and is widely acknowledged to be the world’s premier rodeo. Held every December since 1985 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, the Wrangler NFR is ProRodeo’s richest and most prestigious rodeo, and it showcases the very best cowboys, barrel racers and livestock in the world.

The top 15 contestants in bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping (headers and heelers), saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, barrel racing and bull riding – based on money won during the regular season, the Justin Boots Playoffs and Championships, and for many bull riders, the PRCA Xtreme Bulls Tour – qualify to compete at the Wrangler NFR. At the conclusion of the Wrangler NFR, the sport’s world champions are determined based on total season earnings – what they win during the Wrangler NFR added to what they won before the Wrangler NFR.

The Wrangler NFR consists of 10 rounds on 10 consecutive days. Cowboys and barrel racers earn money by placing first through sixth in any round, and pick up more money by placing first through eighth in the average (cumulative times or points earned during the 10 rounds). At the end of each Wrangler NFR, there are two champions in each event (four for team roping): the average winner, who won the Wrangler NFR by having the best cumulative time or score in his or her event over the 10 rounds, and the world champion, who finished the year with the most money (including what he or she earned at the Wrangler NFR). For each event, the average winner and world champion may be the same person or different people.”

We are proud to be a part of the WNFR and will celebrate Tough Enough to Wear Pink Night on Monday, December 9th.  Pack your Pink!

Join us virtually or in Las Vegas on December, 9 – hope to see you there!
